2007 Word of the Year

Stumbled upon this when I was checking out the meaning of some words online - Merriam-Webster's Word of the Year. In my mind, I was quite sure the word would be 'facebook', but it was another word, kinda related to technology, commonly used in gaming circles. It is the word 'w00t', with 2 zeros in the middle. This exclamation is also an acronym for "we owned the other team".

w00t (interjection)
expressing joy (it could be after a triumph, or for no reason at all); similar in use to the word "yay"
w00t!
I won the contest!

It is interesting how new words are being created everyday and added to our everyday vocabulary. But it is even more fascinating that dictionaries are acknowledging how technology is leading to the creation of hybrid words, made up of letters and numbers.

Well, second on the list is none other than 'facebook'. It is not just a noun to describe the social networking site but also as a verb describing the various actions you can engage in on Facebook, for example searching for friends, adding friends to your list, etc.

But I feel that the Facebook fad is kinda dying off. Personally, I dun engage in the vampire biting, racing and poking. I am more interested in applications that are actually useful and allow people to get to know me better and for me to know others better. I read somewhere that it allows people to keep in touch yet in a less intrusive way than MSN. Quite true.

Have you facebooked today?
